Why Most 'AI Tool Directories' Are Useless (And What We're Doing Different)
We built VattheBest because existing directories are full of dead links, fake tools, and pay-to-play rankings. Here's our approach.
Before building this site, I visited every major AI tools directory. Most of them are terrible, and they're terrible in the same ways.
The problems with existing directories
Dead tools everywhere. Half the listings are products that launched, got a Product Hunt badge, and died three months later. Nobody removes them.
Pay-to-play rankings. The "top" tools are often just the ones that paid for featured placement. That's not curation, that's advertising disguised as a recommendation.
No real information. Most listings are just a name, a one-line description copied from the tool's homepage, and a link. How is that helpful to someone trying to make a decision?
SEO spam. Some directories exist purely to rank for "best AI tools" keywords. They list thousands of tools with auto-generated descriptions and zero editorial judgment.
What we're doing instead
We're trying to be the directory we wanted to find. That means a few things:
Every tool gets real information. Features, pricing, pros and cons, who it's best for, how it actually works. Not just a marketing blurb. We use the tools before writing about them whenever possible.
We remove dead tools. If a tool shuts down, pivots away from AI, or becomes unusable, it comes off the list. This is basic hygiene that most directories skip.
Community input matters. Upvotes help surface the tools people actually like. Submissions let us discover tools we've missed. But we still review everything — we're not going to list a tool just because someone submitted it.
Honest pricing information. "Contact sales" is not a pricing model. We list actual prices where available, including regional pricing differences, so you can compare tools without filling out a demo request form.
Where we're headed
We've got about 500 tools listed right now. The goal isn't to list every AI tool that exists — it's to list the ones worth knowing about, with enough information to make a real decision. We'd rather have 500 well-documented tools than 5,000 ghost listings.
If you've got feedback on how we can be more useful, there's a contact form at the bottom of every page. We actually read those.
